Irene, goodnight Irene..... khatun August 27 2011, 23:41:02 UTC
Hey neighbor! We're battened down and as ready as can be managed. I am thankful we indulged in a whole house generator when we had the spare cash. STill, we have candles and flashlights and such - just in case.
Last time there was a hurricane that affected Baltimore we had only strong winds, rain and power outages in the Manchester area. I believe that was in 2003. It was not nearly as bad as in the Baltimore city.
Should you need room in a functioning freezer, fresh well water or similar items - feel free to call on us. Seeing as both of us live up on hills I wouldn't be too concerned about flooding. Depending on Irene's speed I suspect we'll get the worst of her tonight or Sunday morning. I hope the chickens are safe inside - I'm not sure how well they handle serious storms. Have you secured the hives and are they in a sheltered spot? I'd hate for you to lose them.

Holler if you need us!

Khatun

Thank you! Likewise, I hope you know you can always call on us if we can help out in any way. :)

We're battened down too. Bobby and I spent a good bit of yesterday afternoon putting outside things inside and securing what we could not. (Like the heaps of debris from Earl's bathroom that currently reside in our driveway ...) Every available receptacle is filled with water, and the chickens are locked inside the coop.

Have you secured the hives and are they in a sheltered spot?

They're against the grove of conifers in the front yard. Incidentally, we placed them there to protect them from wind gusts during winter storms ... but they're in about the safest spot possible short of bringing them inside, which I think Bobby would balk at doing. ;) Nonetheless, I imagine the next Carroll County Beekeeper's meeting should be interesting, to hear how everyone's colonies fared ... This isn't something they teach you about during the beekeeper's short course!

We came through in good order. Lots of leaves scattered but no trees down, no damage and just lots of wind and rain. I hope you had a similar experience.
