Another Man's Cage--Chapter Five

Jul 17, 2005 20:25

My apologies for the delay in posting Chapter Five. As some already know (because I have been whining about it all week), my work-Internet was down for most of the week, and so the work that I could accomplish was limited to that which could be done during my few hours of "free time" each night ( Read more... )

I have come to read. (I don't know how I missed this!)

those features that belonged to Ada but not grandfather Finwë: his slender grace, his quick hands, his bright eyes.

:-D *VBG*

"You will be taller than Fëanaro by the time you finish growing."

*snicker* Talking about their heights again, are we?

In truth, Nelyo is only an inch or two shorter than Ada already

Oh, I have to put my beverage down!

He does not like to waste the gifts Arda has given us, he says.

That seems a little off. I would say the gifts the Valar had given us, but Feanor doesn't like them. Or maybe Illuvatar. Or maybe that he doesn't like to be wasteful when the animal in question gave up its life so they could eat. I remember reading something like that somewhere, that Elves after hunting would say a "prayer" of thanks to the spirit of the animal that gave up its life. These were wood elves, but Noldo might be the same.

"You'll sit here until you eat it," he threatens.

Sounds very much like threats I used to get at a child, and I can see Feanor being stern, but I don't know, it almost doesn't have an Elvish feel to it. I can't explain better than that, but it stuck out at me.

Ada says that wine is good for the spirit; indeed, he does seem to laugh more after he has had a few glasses.

Drunk Feanor. Ha ha - I love it! And I love the description of how Canistir destroys his dinner. I can totally see a little kid doing that.

There is a weird tag after he asks for gravy - I think you missed the < on an end italics tag.

"Some Noldor practice that tradition too," Ada says, smiling coyly at Nana. ... "Though not out of fear of rejecting each other's spirits."

Woo hoo - Horny!Feanor and Nerdanel. Gettin it on before marriage. Naughty elves... LaCE my butt...

drooling like an Orc

There were no Orcs in Valinor. There may not have been orcs in M-E at that time - Melkior did not have a chance to make them yet...

Maybe a bit of the good spirits from the wine rubs off on me because suddenly I love him like I'd never known possible.

That's awesome! And it so foreshadows the amount of love his sons would have to have to follow him in that stupid oath.

Tonight, though, they will hold formal counsel, in their bedroom with the door locked.

Yeah they will! Heh heh... Oh...they actually are holding council...

if Nana and Ada were content to read in bed, then I never would have been born.

Ha.

You will take your brother-son as a student, or I swear to Manwë himself that I will not go with you to Formenos. I will stay and teach the child myself, and I will not go to Formenos. And so shall our sons stay in Tirion, where they belong, and you can cry your delusions to your cold bed at night!"

"You are less a wife than you are a traitor and a fool!"

First, I have to say that reading this the first time (from the beginning of the fight), I was leaned into the screen with my eyes and mouth wide. OMG. That being said - it's a little awkward how she repeats herself about not going to Formenos. I think you're trying to get her to do it for emphasis, but it's so similar in structure it just stands out.

"cry your delusions to your cold bed at night" - "less a wife than you are a traitor and a fool"? Brilliant. I loved it. It's so horrible it's wonderful.

OMG that was awesome - in a horrifying shocking kind of way.

The only sounds come from outside: a hammer ringing, puncturing the stillness of the night. It is too loud and sharp to be swung in an act of love, of creation. It is wielded to smash and destroy.

I love how this shows his temper. I also love how this whole thing sets the future up - they disagree when it comes to his extended family and he is so volatile about it. It really gives a basis for his feelings and actions in the future.

And now I have to post the rest in another comment because I've apparently babbled so much I've exceeded the maximum characters...
