Last week, Feanor burned the ships and stranded his kin in Valinor. This week, he goes just a little crazier and gets a little more paranoid ( Read more... )

Aw yeah. That is the Fëanor we know and love. His pride in his own persuasiveness still shines through, even now, even after he's seen the result of all those speeches. And his pride in his actions that won't let him admit just how far in over their heads he and his followers really are. And then the pride rots something inside of him and turns him against his sons. As long as Fëanor can believe that they are insidious and plotting against him, he doesn't have to face up to the fact that he might have made a mistake. He can continue to spin his own little dream world, his own little tapestry of the way he wants life to be.

Sweet of Nelyo to carve a flute for Macalaurë. But I bet Macalaurë went out and found something to make a better flute the next day. They're not that hard to make, and musicians tend to be good at that sort of thing.

Awww...but would Macalaure hurt Nelyo's feelings by choosing to do so the very next day? ;)

I'm relieved, though, that this chapter worked better for you, more as I'd intended. Feanor's voice is a hard one to maintain for long for me, and this story really taxed my endurance. (My solution to that? Write a novel about Feanor! In which he is one of two PoVs that gets a say!) Anyhoo, the less heavy revision/rewrites I have to do the better. We hates revision, we do, preciousss.

I am riveted, Dawn. The growing paranoia and mistrust, is easy to imagine, but it almost more chilling to see a lack of self-confidence. For that reason, the line “…for if my words could lead my people forth from paradise to live in fear and darkness, then what could Nelyo’s do?” I guess the way I am reading this is as the fragmentation of a personality. I often have a reasonably clear sense of where you are going with something, but this time I am completely in suspense. Probably, because on some level, I have not been quite ready to examine where I would go if I were to think through how I would write something about this period.

Oooh...I have you in suspense? My writing gets called lots of things but rarely "suspenseful"....

I don't think that anyone will quite expect the ending. It involves a bit of HoMe minutia, though I don't usually do that, and I hope that it is satisfying and canonical...which is sometimes hard to do. :^/

I have not been quite ready to examine where I would go if I were to think through how I would write something about this period.

I wasn't either! Alas, I was foiled by my dear friend Jenni, who instead of requesting smut (as I'd expected) asked for the "Noldor just arrived in Middle-earth." It's a good example of why I like getting challenges from friends versus only writing what I decide I'm ready to do. :)

Since I am so woefully far behind, I've decided that I'm going to wait until I get back to school and use a bunch of print credits to print this (since I have over 1,000 credits!). How many chapters is this? (Should I wait until the whole thing is posted to print it, or would that have me waiting until next year?)

Nah, it's only a novella with a week or two of postings left. (I can't remember! :^P) Would you like me to email you an MS Word copy? It'd probably take fewer pages than printing on LJ, I'd think.

Sure! I was going to copy it into word first anyway, but since I am a lazy person, I will always accept attachments that make such difficult work unecessary. ;)
