Really? Lucky you. I had a long spell where I was Under the Influence of Feanor, which meant that Fingolfin was Teh Evil. I would have blamed him for a lot of things that--looking at things from his perspective--were not so much his fault as a result of his situation. A lot like Feanor.
Nonetheless, Feanor is not happy that I've grown to like him. :^/
Well, there certainly was a spell where I would have been like "Um, one of those F- ones yeah?" I don't even remember when I began liking the Sil or when certain characters (erm, well Houses) became my favorite.
And, unfortunately, 100% true. Once I saw the entry for Feanor, I thought, "Oh. He seems rather important." Which is when I realized that I was going to have to read the book again, more closely this time. And that second reading was the point where I got officially hooked.
So you could say that Feanor--or my ignorance of him--was my reason for falling in love with the Sil. :)
Oh, hey, readig the Silm was not so bad. At least, they only have one name in it. After going through HoME, I felt like I was going crazy and I'm still not 100% sure I know all the Quenyan names of Finwe's family members. Not to mention that I laughed at Maedhros and thought: 'This kid has almost as many names as Turin!'
The first time reading of The Sil for me left (seriously, just typed "theft". Feanorian slip?) me rather dazed. I don't think I could've told you a thing about it. But now I've got everyone straight! Including Quenya names, I think.
I haven't even gotten to HoME yet. I own Morgoth's Ring, which has, I just realized last night, become lost among my schoolwork. :-\
I do think I remember reading the Book of Lost Tales I, where Finwe(?) I think it was, was called Maidros. I was like "No." :P
Oh, I remember going through the first two books of HoME and having massive head-aches. It is rather annoying to see the process of creation and just how much it took Tolkien to make up his mind on who is called what and who is who's father/son. (In some cases, that's not clear even now!)
I do think I remember reading the Book of Lost Tales I, where Finwe(?) I think it was, was called Maidros. I was like "No."
Lol! I know what you mean. There are many things in HoME that make me say "Heck no!" I must have missed that one with Finwe/Maidros.
No joke! It's almost like Tolkien said "Ok, I'm going to use these names." And then drew them out of a hat each day, such that each character has every other character's name at least once!! Ai!

Really? Ick.
I do think that I recall that Tolkien changed Maedhros' name to "Maidros" at one point, to make it more Anglicized. I guess he figured his dumb readers couldn't figure out that pesky "dh." ;)

Lo! I think I gave up trying to figure out who was who after the 643rd time I said "Wait, which Fin- is that?"

You know, I would've figured this out a lot earlier if the pronunciation guide had been in the bloody front instead of the back!!!!!!!!!!
I think "Maidros" is...well, a bad name. I like "Maedhros" much better!
