have you ever had an idea that's kept you up all night?  I have now and I think I've found what I'm supposed to develop in my soon future and I think I almost have the knowledge to do it.  I may come to some of you for advice though.  Please don't steal my idea if I do come to you, I will make sure you get any deserved appreciation.

You need a non-disclosure statement and to immediately write your idea down somewhere, so that it's protectable by commonlaw copyright or potentially patent, depending on what it is.

i was going to come to you for law advice ;-)

thanks!

and yes, hopefully i will be able to go for a patent with it. I've got it written down in basic descriptions right now. How do I make it protectable by commonlaw copyright? I've heard things about like mailing yourself a postmarked copy or original of your idea.

All you have to do is write it down. No need to postmark it to yourself. If you're going to sue for infringement, though, you must have federal registration. I'm not sure what your idea is though, so it may not be eligible for copyright protection.

Ooops, too late, I already stole it.

And I'm not giving it back.
