Hello LJ. I have been good at neglecting you lately. Now I am going to abuse you, for that is how low I have sunken.

Did any of you play dogfighter style space sims back in the day? Say, Wing Commander, (X-Wing vs.) TIE Fighter, Freelancer, Tachyon: The Fringe, Darkstar One, etc.?

Chris Roberts is a pretty cool dude from my childhood. He was the guy behind most of the Wing Commander series and also had a major role in the development of Freelancer. He's recently popped out of the woodwork and expressed an interest in crowdsourcing a new PC based space sim game. (technically two, it's complicated)

I have invested all of zero dollars into Kickstarter to this day, but this was enough to make even me budge because Chris Roberts and this style of game in particular have a place very near and dear to my heart.

So here's the thing. Chris Roberts has some potential investors lined up, who will fund the remainder of the money he needs to release game if they can hit the 2 million mark in 22 days. They are already just under the 50% mark. A $30 contribution will get you a copy of the game if the funding succeeds, which is 50% off what they plan for it to retail for. Anything more than that is gravy, and will get you fancier starter ships and the like. You can choose to have your money refunded to you if the initial funding fails, but things are looking pretty good for hitting that 100% mark so far. You can pledge less as well, but if you really intend to play the game $30 is the sweet spot.

Head over to http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/ (or if you prefer Kickstarter, here), see if this strikes your fancy, and spread the word if it does. I've been waiting years for another game done in this style, and Chris Roberts is pretty much the guy who invented these. The draft of the Official FAQ and the Unofficial FAQ are also good resources.

If you have any questions about what your pledge is getting you in terms of gameplay stuff, I am a total forum nerd and can probably answer your questions in the comments. They'll be posting more info about the ships in the coming week but I have rough approximations I can provide.

(if you research on this, I caution against paying too much attention to the talking heads who say he's promising too much for too little: the "persistent world" is going to be little more than a fancier version of Freelancer's multiplayer that is run centrally, with player encounters instancing off to ensure that individual scenes are kept in the <100 player category. people are allowed to run their own private servers and not participate, and modding will be encouraged.)
