Summer... You Fine Son of a Bitch

Jul 23, 2005 12:08

It's surprising the amount of people I've talked to that have explained to me that their summer is not going so well. I'm not gonna lie, I am really enjoying mine. I'm getting a lot done, yet am not over working my self. I've been staying in good shape for the running season, and have been working out about 5-6 days a week. I am reading a few books, and working towards my license. I am hanging out with friends all the time, and knocking a few video games off my list. Pretty much, the only disapointing event that has happened is my 2 on the AP Biology exam. Which reminds me, I am going to a specialist on Monday to get tested for my timed tests issues.

I just got back from the only camp I will be attending this summer, and that was the Challenge 2005 leadership camp at Fredonia. I have been to a lot of week long summer camps during my life, and this leadership camp was most definitely one of my favorites. There were several people from Ken-West that attended... some of those people were Anton Dorfman, Tim Rogers, Molly Evans, and Judy Boatman. On the first day, every camper was divided in to different color groups based on personality. Now, most people have taken those online tests that help sort you in to a personality group... but this test is actually universally known I guess, and is a proven tool used commonly. There are four colors...

Blue: sympathetic, personal, compassionate, peaceful
Green: analytical, conceptual, collected, investigative
Orange: witty, charming, spontaneous, impulsive, generous, eager, physical
Gold: loyal, prepared, thorough, punctual, faithful, organized, concerned

I'm interested to hear what you guys think I am... I'm an orange. Basically, this is how I see it. On the outside I'm an orange, on the inside I'm a green. My blue is very prominent, almost as much as my green. My orange significantly beats out both though. My gold is nearly absent based on the facts that I'm not usually on time to places, I'm generally unorganized, and I generally do not prepare ahead.

These color terms were used all the time during the week at camp, and I imagine I will use them continually from now on. It is very helpful to use, I hope most people will learn their color one day. The purpose for these colors is to realize differences, and improve unity.

So the week went well, I made dozens of new friends. My orange was more prominent than ever before, and I was absolutely never afraid to go up to someone I never met and strike up a conversation. The whole week, but especially towards the end, flirting was not uncommon. Me and a few girls got very close by the end of the week. I guess there will be a reunion in October that I will hopefully attend... hopefully x-country will not interfere with that.

Leadership skills were improved by the use of the ropes course. This course was impressive, and forced many uncertain people to participate in events they were uncomfortable with. This was a positive "force" though, and was commonly referred to as "Challenge by Choice" or simply positive peer-pressure. At one of these courses, there was a large wall. At the top of this wall on the opposite side there was a platform. The goal was to get everyone up this wall, and on to the platform... no ropes, no props. The very first person had to be tall, and stood at the bottom of the wall on somebody's shoulders. They reached up and grabbed the top of the wall and pulled themself up. After that, every other person got up similarly, but there was now a person at the top to help pull smaller people up. I ended up being the last person, it was planned ahead of time. It was decided I was the best choice I guess. I got a running start because I had no one to lift me, and I ran towards the wall, flew up in the air, and reached to grab a tall person's hands hanging down from the platform. After a few times, I was successful. I asked the girl taking pictures to snap one of me in mid-air, but I think she forgot. This course, like most of the courses, was extra difficult because we had some very heavy and large people. One guy was a black man in his mid 20s who was built and played football... somehow we got him up.

Well, I've written a lot, but I have more to say. I can finally review Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because I've seen it 3 times. I'll also do War of the Worlds. I'll probably write some more about camp too.
