Ok, so I have to admit that I'm not the best nor brightest student. At times I can be very lazy and unmotivated to do any type of academic work and I'm sure most people have felt this way. Throughout my childhood life I hated reading. The only thing I would read were sports articles or the sports ticker on the bottom of the screen on ESPN. And as Ive gotten older I still didn't like reading. Through High School and even the beginning of my college journey, did I not like to read. It was until only recently when I started taking my Communication courses that I started picking up books and actually started to read, and I liked it. Some of the courses and classes I've taken have opened my eyes to a new world and a new self discovering of myself and the book I've read had much to do with it.
Now I spend a lot of my free time reading books that spark my interest as there is an endless search for more knowledge. Books I've read lately are mostly business type books, but they are helping me to understand the "real world" out there. I soon will be graduating and while I was very fortunate and lucky to land a full-time job before I graduated, reading these book can and will only help me to be a better person when I get there.
So my problem. I'm taking a course with summer called Ethnography. I honestly have no clue what Ethnography so I did what any person my age would do, google search. The search gave me a wide range of answers and I now know that it has to deal with some type(s) of research methods. It's still not clear to me but that was enough to make me want to take the class and learn more about it. The problem lies in the required text book we have to purchase and read. The book SUCKS!
Perhaps it could be a very good book and it's just not what I am accustomed to reading that could be the problem. Yet I still feel the book sucks! In the introduction, it gives no reference to what Ethnography is and assume that the reader already knows the topic at hand. I don't blame the author of the book because it's their view point, but my instructor. You really need to read just the preface and introduction to have read probably half the book. I have only read chapter 10 but more that 3/4 of the content there is redundant or unnecessary.
After doing a self analysis, this is probably why I hate reading. There are certain type of books and styles that will capture my attention and it is only when I find these books that I'll read. My whole college experience could have been better with better course books and I might even have a better GPA if this were the case. So the point I'm trying to make is if you are a college student or potential college student, ask the professor for the book(s) for the course and skim through them. See if it can hold your attention and make you want to learn more. If you want to get the most out of your education, this might be the best way to go.
