With this being the 50th anniversary of Star Trek Creation have extended their annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas going from 4 to 5 days. They will have over 100 Star Trek guests in attendance, although that number is the same number of guests as they had the last several years with only four days of programming.
I was hoping that Creation would really put on a spectacular show this year, but this weekend received an excited email from them announcing their 89th and 90th guests. These are Scott Bakula and John Billingsley, from Star Trek Enterprise.
For me that's a very disappointing announcement, not because I've any particular dislike of the show but because they've both been several times over the last five years. In fact of the ninety guests so far announced, 81 of them have been at the show over the last few years, most of them several times, and two of them only qualify as Star Trek guests because they once watched the show, but otherwise having nothing to do with it.
Only the following eight are new
Whoopi Goldberg
Kirstie Alley
Neal McDonough
Elinor Donahue
Christopher Held
Sandy Gimpel
Laura Banks
Sherry Jackson
That's less than 10% of the line-up. Obviously at a big show like this they need big names like William Shatner and indeed Scott Bakula. But, for me the show should have limited the line up to no more than 50% repeat guests. It is entertaining to see actors again but they end up repeating the same stories and I'm not sure what Creation will do with the current line up to fill four days, let alone five.
The ticket I bought includes several "free" autographs, to add insult to injury in their excited email I was told that would include Scott Bakula and John Billingsley. As an autograph collector I do want their autographs, but having seen them several times before I've already got their autographs. In fact of the autographs I'm being offered the only one I want is from Neal McDonough. Free autos from Jeri Ryan, Scott Bakula, John Billingsley and others are all but worthless too me.
I've booked for this event, I enjoy meeting friends and its a good show, but last year, which also had very few new guests was something of a disappointment. Shannon and I only booked for this one because we thought the 50th anniversary show would be special. Next year is the 30th anniversary of Star Trek - The Next Generation. I'm expecting that to similarly be advertised as a big show. But as things stand we won't be there. The ticket price, airfare and hotel all cost a lot of money, there are many other shows in America and elsewhere that I could attend instead of this one.
Last year they had about 105 guests as I recall, that gives them 15+ more to announce for this year. If those are all, or mostly new guests then my feelings might change. But if we just see another 15 guests announced that were there in the last few years then the show will be a big disappointment to me.
