Books read, 2015

Jan 01, 2017 20:12

Same conditions as immediately below.

January:

Firefight, Brandon Sanderson

February:

Alan Turing: The Enigma, Andrew Hodges

Read this after seeing The Imitation Game. Read it in e-book so it's not obvious just how long it is, but it took up nearly all of January, so it must have been pretty long.

Trigger Warning, Neil Gaiman
The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination, John Joseph Adams, ed.

Part of the 2014 Hugo packet. This was an off-and-on read all through the latter part of 2014 and the first two months of 2015. It goes here because that's when I finished.

EXO, Stephen Gould
Full Fathom Five, Max Gladstone

March:

The March North, Graydon Saunders
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, "Less Wrong"

As above, serials go in the month when I finish them.

Legion: Skin Deep, Brandon Sanderson
The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt

April:

Perfect State, Brandon Sanderson
Tom Derringer and the Aluminum Airship, Lawrence Watt-Evans
Ancillary Sword, Anne Leckie
London Falling, Paul Cornell

May:

Storm Front, Jim Butcher
Beyond Life, James Branch Cabell

Really quite a strange book, and one I don't recommend even to those who enjoy his fantasy novels. Has some helpful footnotes giving details about novels and novelists referenced: I suspect (but am not sure) that the novels were bestsellers at the time, and the idea that a reader would need footnotes about them was sarcasm. For the reader a century later, the situation is a bit different.

Doctor Who: The Coming of the Terraphiles, Michael Moorcock
The Moon Maze Game, Larry Niven and Steven Barnes

June:

The Three-Body Problem, Cixin Liu, Ken Liu trans.
The Lands of Passing Through, Alexandra Erin
Fool Moon, Jim Butcher
Uprooted, Naomi Novik

July:

The Philosopher Kings, Jo Walton
Grave Peril, Jim Butcher
Points of Departure, Pamela Dean and Patricia Wrede
Summer Knight, Jim Butcher

It was at this point that I gave up on the idea of reading the whole Harry Dresden series in order to judge Skin Game for the Hugos.

Agatha H. and the Voice of the Castle, Phil & Kaja Foglio

August:

Aurora, Kim Stanley Robinson
The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare
Last Call in the Menagerie, Victor Mollo
The Day the Dead Came to Show and Tell, "Mira Grant"
A Succession of Bad Days, Graydon Saunders

September:

The Dark Forest, Cixin Liu, Joel Martinsen trans.
Chasing the Phoenix, Michael Swanwick
A Little Golden Book of Ghastly Stuff, Neil Gaiman

October:

Lifeboats, Diane Duane
The Fifth Season, N.K. Jemisin
Last First Snow, Max Gladstone

November:

Two Serpents Rise, Max Gladstone
Bridge at the Cranmer Club, Adam Parrish
Shades in Shadow, N.K. Jemisin
The Winter Long, Seanan McGuire
A Red-Rose Chain, Seanan McGuire
Spirits Abroad, Zen Cho

Another story collection I'd been reading off and on for a while.

Ancillary Mercy, Anne Leckie
Future Visions

This story collection didn't have an editor credit that I could find.

December:

The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson
Shadows of Self, Brandon Sanderson
The Martian, Andy Weir
Weighing Shadows, Lisa Goldstein

50 total: 2 literary fiction, 4 non-fiction, 44 SF or fantasy.
