Mounties get their Spider-Man

Police arrested a man in a Spider-Man suit Friday morning after he scaled a pedestrian overpass in Port Coquitlam, closing the Mary Hill bypass for three hours during the morning rush hour.

The regional Emergency Response Team was deployed to capture the action hero, who was making a statement on behalf of Fathers-4-Justice Canada, a group that campaigns for a fathers’ equal rights to raise their children after divorce.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Brenda Gresiuk said the local detachment and Port Coquitlam’s Fire and Emergency Services got the call about the stunt at around 5 a.m., and the bypass was subsequently closed for “public safety reasons” until he was taken into custody. The provincial highway reopened at around 9 a.m.

“It’s always dangerous when someone puts themselves in a situation like that,” Gresiuk said, adding although Spidey was wearing a safety harness, “we treat it quite seriously.”

Charges of mischief are pending.

A request for comment from Fathers-4-Justice Canada wasn’t immediately returned Friday.
