aside from feeling tremendously lucky to have just seen Joanna Newsom play at a small, homey SF venue, the thing that occurs to me after watching her today is: she's ---really really--- good. That harp is something else; it makes all those ethereal noises, sure, but the thing itself is such a ridiculous body of an instrument, and by all accounts is extreemly difficult to play: more like blood and bone and sinew up there: the way she moves with it, and sings at the same time, i don't get those kind of vibes from anyone other than say Tori Amos, the way she works her pianos, and she's spoken and written lots about the "body" of the piano-- and the harp, after all, is literally more or less the guts of the piano . . . .

J.N. can sing the hell out of a song, too; her voice is way peculiar for sure but i don't think i realized even on the album how much power she could put behind it, really really cool to hear her work and weave her way around those arrangements.

and no keyboard, either! She played it all on the harp, even Inflammatory Writ, which was a joy since that's a keyboard song on the album, and looked tricky to translate into plucked strings.

way cool.
