Day 1

Jan 10, 2011 18:43

Well, the procedure was a success. I am now down 4 teeth and in pain.

My parents came in from Milwaukee to drive me home because after getting an IV, you can't drive. So we get there and i fill out all this paperwork, and then go in. Right before we went to the back, my dad decided to let them know that both him and my grandpa don't wake up for a while after getting an IV. Then the oral surgeon told me he was only going to do the top teeth because he was afraid i wouldn't wake up. Then, if it worked well, i could come back and do the bottom two. Or I had another option. Local sedation and not going under. I was set to get them all out and get it over with all at once.

I opted for the local sedation. I was very nervous about a week prior to this surgery, so you can imagine how nervous i was when i learned i would be awake through the ordeal.

They gave me the shots in the gums and then put the oxygen/nitrous oxide on my nose. After a bit, the nitrous hit me. It was fantastic. I couldn't feel anything but a little pressure, and it was just like being drunk. I really wish i could have written down my inner monologue. It was pretty funny.

"Uh, here comes that grinder. Get that thing in here. Grind that son of a b..."

"Come on man, yank that sucker outta there. Get in there, work it"

I don't remember the other stuff i was thinking about. but my jokes made me laugh to myself. It was really fun. I was very helpful and calm. My body knew that this shouldn't be happening. I could feel myself tense up like i was preparing for pain, but it didn't hurt.

Looking back, im glad i did the local. I hear people feel crappy from all the drugs afterward, and then i knew what went on during.

My parents took me to walgreens and i got soooooo many drugs. Anti-nausea, extreme pain (Oxycodone or something), IB preufen, anti-biotic, and a mouth rinse. It was only 5 dollars! How exciting! I decided to drop my work insurance and go on my parents till im 25. Its the same cost, but the coverage is fantastic. They pretty much pay 80% of anything i have done. The only drawback is that there is no dental. This procedure was under medical since it was surgery.

The funny thing is that i had to give my dad directions to walgreens and then my house. I don't know how we would have gotten back! Even leaving, i thought he knew where he was going and he made a wrong turn. If i was on that IV medicine, we would have been screwed.

When i got back to my house, my parents stayed to watch me eat. My mouth was still super numb, so it was hard. I ate a very small amount of ice cream and yogurt. Then i drank a heath shake with lots of vitamins, and drank a vitamin water. There was a lot of blood during this process. The gauze was very bloody. After i ate, i replaced it and i think the bleeding has pretty much stopped. I hope thats good.

Since then, i watched goodfellas on DVD and am now watching Seinfeld.

Its funny. Im never busy with all my computer work, and now 3 people want me to look at their computers. Jeeze!

Its nice to be awake and normal. I can still talk a little and text and message people. I'm definitely not out of it. I'm not sure if my mouth is still numb or not. My chin is back to normal and tongue. I don't know if its the medicine working well (I don't feel woozy like everyone said I would), if it's still numb, or a little of both. The surgeon said he put a lot of anesthetic in and I may be numb till tomorrow. I think it's still numb, and im worried about how much it's going to hurt tomorrow. Thank god we have drugs this day and age. What would we have done without it. They are really amazing what they can do.

Well, i think that's enough for today. I'm going to try to eat more later, replace the gauze, watch another movie and then sleep.

I hope tomorrow goes well. More to come.
