I've given my son a few books to read during the summer, and I'm curious what the feedback will be. When I was in high school I always enjoyed good historical fiction, and my author of choice for that genre was Kenneth Roberts. I used to eat his settings, historical details, and lively characters from the Pre-Revolutionary War period in New England with a spoon, licking the last bits as though they were droplets of maple syrup, and it was as my rewardless licks turned desperate, that frustrating point where I knew the fantastic pleasurable adventure was over, that I dashed to the library on my bike to get my next Kenneth Roberts book. I'm hoping my son will feel some of that same excitement, and that he too will lick the last bits of early New England goodness from his first book, Arundel, just before he smacks his lips and reaches for his next, Rabble In Arms. I'll keep you posted..
