I finally got around to ordering the parts to finish closing in the first section of greenhouse. I haven't been able to find a good greenhouse supply around here, and I just wasn't motivated to drive down to Oregon to shop down there, so I ended up ordering the parts online. At first I was going to go with regular old 6 mil greenhouse plastic, but when I saw how much shipping was going to cost, I quickly changed my plans. The woven poly that Peaceful Vally carries is MUCH tougher, and shipping from the factory is included in the price. Regular poly + shipping was only about $50 less than the cost of the woven poly.

So all I have to do is frame the ends, pick up a used door and attach the plastic and I will have 200 square feet of growing space for about $450. With an inner "tent" of agribon-19 I should be able to get the tomato and chile starts out there in early march, with most of them eventually making it out into the open garden, but a few kept in the greenhouse to extend the season. I'm really excited to finally get this project going.

I also ordered a Can-O-Worms vermicomposting system. I already have two homemade bins and a Worm Factory bin. With this combination I can make a decent start at putting together a worm composting website, with reviews of the more common systems as well as do it yourself plans. If it actually starts making money, I'll look at picking up a worm wigwam, which is a flow-through system for quantities like you find at restaurants, and feed it with free manure from some of the farms around here.

Another plan for this year is to start working on my perennial garden. I'll be ordering most of the plants from local northwest nurseries (Burnt Ridge, Raintree, One Green World) because the plants will be selected for the region, but I tossed in some rhubarb and asparagus into my Peaceful Valley order to get the order to a higher discount level. It's one of those cases where buying $15 of something gets me a $50 savings.

I have no idea how far all my garden plans will get this year, but at least I know that one greenhouse will be built and something other than blueberries will be in the perennial garden.
