Since this seems to be the Year of the Really Bad Teams, I was curious about the Magic/Tragic numbers. In baseball the "Magic Number" is the number wins and/or opponent losses a team needs clinch a playoff spot. "The Tragic Number", or Elimination Number is the sum of wins by the first place team and losses by the other team needed to eliminate that team from the playoffs.
I googled around and found the formulas and they seem to be right.
Who will be the first team mathematically eliminated from the playoffs? Right now Tampa Bay is the front runner...so to speak, with a tragic number of four. I didn't go through and make wild card calculations, so even if the Saints and Bucs combine for 4 NO wins and TB losses, the Bucs could still theoretically win one of the wild card spots. Theorectically.
If the Saints win their next two, and the Bucs lose their next two (after the bye this week) then bye, bye Bucs.
Other notable Tragic Numbers:
Kansas City 5
Tennessee 5
Cleveland 6
Detroit 6
Oakland 6
St. Louis 6
Carolina 7
Washington 7
Buffalo 8
Chicago 8
