Umbrella Etiquette

It rains a lot in Tokyo. Raincoats would be too hot to wear in the muggy weather. Everyone has umbrellas and they're for sale all over the place.

The question arises, "What do you do with your wet umbrella?"

In front of many buildings there are stands to hold your umbrella. At our hotel, you can lock your umbrella into a rack.

Many places also offer a supply of long plastic sleeves to put your umbrella in so you can carry it around without wetting everything.

Some places (like the Belle.Vie department store and Starbucks) have an ingenious automatic device. You stick your umbrella in from the top and pull it out through a long side gate. It's now wrapped in plastic. Very fast and efficient. There's a container to put used sleeves beside it as you leave the establishment.
