National Coming-Out Day
Letters to the Editor

Sometime during the weekend of Oct. 1, an individual committed an act of vandalism and hate crime-the inscription of homophobic graffiti-at the office of one of the faculty members in the Department of Communication. A similar incident, a hate crime based in racism, occurred some months ago just several offices away.
We write as chairs, directors and deans of several university units that are housed in the Communication Building: Gerald J. Baldasty, Chair, Department of Communication; Judith A. Howard, Divisional Dean of Social Sciences; Ronald S. Irving, Interim Dean of Arts -- Sciences; Kristin Millis, Director of Student Publications; Suzanne T. Ortega; Dean, The Graduate School; Bruce Shapiro, Executive Director, Dart Center for Journalism -- Trauma; and Kathleen Woodward, Director, Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities.
Our message is simple: Acts of hate, acts of prejudice, acts of bias and discrimination have no place at the University of Washington, no place in the institution of education. Education is, at its core, about discovery. Discovery cannot occur in a climate of fear. Therefore, we endorse the vision of the University of Washington's Q Center: a UW community where justice, equality, compassion, and respect prevail.
Today is National Coming-Out Day. We support all of those on this campus who are lesbian, gay, queer, bisexual, transgender and those too who are heterosexual. We are committed to establishing and nurturing a campus climate that is safe for all who share in the joy of intellectual engagement.
