Today it became apparent that, while Southwind was not going anywhere in a hurry, teh clock was ticking on her motor - corrosion was proceeding each hour it was in the drink.
It is important to not only get the motor out of the water, but to get it serviced immediately, since corrosion dramatically accelerates upon exposure to air. The marine shop has no technicians on the weekend so it was imperative to get her out and stablized sooner rather than later.
I left work, picked up my wetsuit, mask and snorkel and jumped in the harbour. A half hour of wading near the shore turned up a step ladder, my stern railing - and my motor - or what's left of it.
Seemed like great news but, upon delivering to Klaus Marine, it looks like it was for naught. Damage is extensive.
Klaus Marine figures it will cost more to repair it than to replace it. And in point of fact, has an identical 6HP longshaft motor that a customer refurbished and then abandoned that he figures he'll sell for $895.
Frankly, I do not yet know whether I need a motor yet. I first have to detemine if I have a boat to put it on.
