The difference between jail and prison: If you are sentenced to less than a year for a crime, you go to jail. If you are sentenced to at least a year and a day, then you go to prison.

This allows us to figure out how long a Monopoly turn is. If jail is only for a year or less stay, and Monopoly forces you to pay and get out after spending three turns in jail, then that means three turns in Monopoly are for a year. Each turn in Monopoly represents four months of imaginary time!
