Today, watching the marathon Worst Jobs in History on the Histroy channel, I learned the origin of two common words/phrases.

The Saxons learned how to make their ships from sawn planks, but cutting them was hard work. It took two people and a long saw. The handles of the saw are called dogs. Being on top was back-breaking work, but still way better than being on the bottom.
