beware preapproved credit junk mail

This was a comment in starfishchick's blog, but I thought I'd post it here for the 8 people in the world that aren't part of sfc's flist.

A saw a news article t'other day wherein a guy wondered how easy it would be to steal someone's identity from their garbage.

He took one of those preapproved applications you get in the mail, tore it up into little tiny pieces, then taped it all back together again, put a someone elses address on it, and mailed it in. Lo and behold, several weeks later, didn't he get a shiny new credit card, with his name on it, in the mail at that other address.

The applications are often machine-processed, so there was noone to notice that it was 1 part paper to 3 parts scotch tape with a dash of eggshell...
