More computer case modding. I'm sure one of the flaws in my art is that I don't know when to leave a picture. If I was painting the Mona Lisa, Brian Sewell would be saying:
Had David been a genius he would have stopped with a single Pteranodon, however the flock he chose to include overwhelms the viewer, and one is left ultimately unsatisfied.
But anyway, I don't know when to stop, and I've finally got fed up with the nasty silver thing on the front. A new grille is required. As before Homebase are my friend. (I have nothing against B&Q, or any of the other DiY stores, its just that they're round the corner). Gold-coloured aluminium wire is double-layered, and slightly overlapped to make the layer of mesh thicker, and appear finer. I'm attaching it with brassed nuts that fit nicely into the holes for the previous panel, but I'm attaching them from the front, rather than the rear.
The mesh is roughly cut out then finished off in-situ. It doesn't matter if it isn't perfect as I add some green leatherette around the edges to finish off.
The final step is to reposition the LEDs inside the case- they were attached to the back of the silver plate, but I've tied them onto the front of the main case through holes that form a fan guard for the front. A white cotton hankerchief is bought, and sacrificed to serve my needs. This should help keep some dust out, and also nicely diffuses the lights from the LEDs.
I think its rather pretty. I might try branding it with a label. I did try writing "Xion" on the hankerchief itself, but the result was unsatisfactory. Maybe printing the letters and glueing them on the back? See what I mean about not knowing when to stop?
If I could hook up dials to flick back and forth with the HDD activity (one for each drive) I would. I have found instructions for something that might work, but it involves electronic skills that are beyond me, which is a shame, but does mean I haven't tried anything particularly risky. I still like the idea of putting drop handles on the top, for ease of transportation, but I've only seen them in an "antique brass finish", and I don't want to mix radically different finishes of the same metal together. I'm still thinking about adding a clock and a small barometer, and I might well put another thermometer in, over by the PSU.
