Well the Nova Mob SF group isn't that far away from where you'll be living. Just a short flight away in fact (although it would at least be a two night stay given the flight schedules). That is, if you get really desperate.
Melbourne. Tasmania Air goes from Flinders Island to Essendon (Melbourne's small plane airport) three times a week. For a comparatively large fare, it appears, but it sure beats the 9 hour trip on the weekly bulk cargo boat. You may find this Fan Guide to Australia marginally useful. I can't judge for the accuracy of the entire thing the Adelaide entry, while substantially correct, has a certain rather amusing bias but it might be helpful. And of course, you'll be perfectly situated to start the Bass Strait Science Fiction Writers Society. Does anything ever happen in Launceston?
LoL. Lonnie... I don't know. We have a town here called Pietermaritzburg - Nice little city as cities go, but it's called sleepy hollow for good reason. And the scary part is that it shares the red (well orange-red) brick and Victorian achitecture and the feel of Launceston. It'll probably turn into a buzzing hive of culture and social activity. It's not very big, about 200K and while UTAS has a campus there, the main campus is in Hobart.
The flights are pricy, eh? that was my impression.

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra does a surprisingly high number of world premieres of Classical music, although the detail that most pieces were written by Australian composers isn't a surprise. Looking the orchestra up just now, I read:
The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra was established as such in 1948 as a result of a partnership between the State Government, the Hobart and Launceston City Councils and the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Clicking through their web site, I found that two of the six locations TSO usually perform at are in Launceston. The albums of theirs I've listened to are fully up to professional level. (I freely admit not knowing enough to judge more precisely than competent/incompetent in this sort of thing
