Wildfire at midnight

Aug 04, 2009 13:43

Barbs smelled smoke last night at about 12 and as this is fire season, and our neighbour had burned off the field below us, got up and had a look.

Otherwise this might have been a very different story - one that included recently roasted or asphixiated monkey, Mrs Monkey and various furkids. The wind had got up and found an ember somewhere and got into the wattle brush-piles next to the stream and was heading for our place.

As is, I am just a very stiff, sore and tired monkey. With the tractor pump from next door, and a tank ful on ute and five of us and backpacks (25 litre backpacks of water and a hand pump) we got it out before it got through to our place.

And now I hear my little one (6'2"- but still my little one) has flu (I am sure h1N1) - he's at Uni in res 10 hours drive away.
