Miscellaneous Weekend

This weekend, we hosted my dear brother shaws_ghoti, which was convenient since the wife was at work most of the weekend, so I got some help caring after the little man.

Friday we got our Federal tax refund back, so I was allowed to run out and buy a 1GB stick of RAM for my Mac Mini, which came from the factory with a woefully undersized 256MB. What's funny about that is that someone called on Apple's behalf a couple months after I got the Mini last spring to ask a series of survey questions about it and my purchasing experience. (I do so love Apple.) A number of the questions ran along these lines: "Other than the amount of memory, what would you change..." Not long after, they started offering the Mini with 512MB of RAM for exactly the same price as the 256MB version, which was essentially a free upgrade.

So, I bought this 1GB stick and then had to go buy some putty knives in order to pry open the Mini's case. I scratched up the bottom a bit, but didn't break any of the plastic clippy things, so in all, a victory. Oh, and it's screaming fast now. Sweet.

In somewhat related news, I've almost finished digitizing all my CDs. I actually started this process before complaining about the RIAA and their aims on my backup scheme, and in the process discovered something distressing. My copy of Testimonial Dinner: Songs of XTC, which I had bought from my college radio station way back in the day, has gone missing. I still have the case, but I can't find the CD. Happily Amazon actually seems to have it in stock (though just barely), unlike The Tank Girl Soundtrack, which was borrowed by a girlfriend back in freshman year of college and never returned. Color me bummed.
