Sometimes, I Do Miss the Marines

Feb 24, 2006 22:46

Last night I watched some special on the Discovery Channel about Marines at Ft. Knox learning to drive tanks.

"Whenever you open the hatch keep your thumb on the lock, understand?" the Sergeant Instructor says.
"Yes, Sergeant," they all reply.
"Because if you don't lock this back, the hatch is gonna swing back and break your nose. And then I'm going to laugh, because I told you to keep your hand on it. And the other Marines are going to laugh, too. And then you're going to be a "No-Go" because I told you how to do it right and you didn't because you're a dumbass."

I laughed, really hard.

The interesting thing about the documentary was that they happened to be following a group of Marines whose 9 week armor training started in late July 2001. I didn't happen to notice that right away, and when tappu mentioned that it must be an old special since none of the Marines were in the new-style digital camouflage, I replied with something to the effect that the war was probably "tomorrow" for them. Didn't quite know how right I was. I wonder if any of those guys were in Iraq at the same time I was.
