Well yet another long period has passed since I last updated this thing. I keep seeming to go through patches where nothing gets updated for weeks. Its now been something like 6 weeks since I last made an entry into this journal, so here's a new one.
Quite a bit has happened since my last update. At the end of April it was my birthday! I am now at the ripe old age of 22! Its all downhill from here.... Didnt really do much for my birthday, as the past few years while at Uni have seen some huge nights out and much illness on my part. Heather came back up to Aber for the weekend, so it was nice to see her again.
I've been continuing with my driving lessons. Its now less than a week till my driving lesson. I really do hope I pass this, my car is sat outside my flat, and I really want to be able to drive her around, and to be able to go places! I should be ok, as long as I dont go to pieces, or let my attention wander while driving!
Last weekend was the UWA Fencing Club Competition. In previous years I havent done that well in this competition, but despite that I was fairly relaxed about this one. I also made a concious effort to keep my footwork and actions small and neat, and it looks like it paid off! In Foil, I made it through to the semi-finals where I lost to Lefty Dave 15-9 (this is the most i've ever managed to score against him). This put me into the Bronze-medal play off where I was fencing Alex. Unfortunately I lost this too, partly due to being knackered by this point, but also not really willing myself to win. After changing weapons (to one with a smaller pistol-grip) I managed to claw some points back but by this point it was too late. I lost 15-10. Still 4th in Foil is my best result for a long while and is quite encouraging. Based on some observations to do with my weapons, ive now ordered some smaller handles for my foils in an effort to give me some more point control.
The next day (Sunday) saw the Sabre and Epee competition. Sabre went even better! Despite me not having done Sabre for about a year, I managed to get through to the semi-finals, purely by simply stepping back and looking for the parry-riposte each time. Hey it worked! However this wasnt enough to get me to the final, I lost to Alex, putting me, just like in Foil, through to the Bronze-Medal play-off. Here I was fencing Tom, one of the few members of the club who fences Sabre as his main choice of weapon, and who also considers himself to be the best Sabreuer in the Club. In a really close and tense bout, we drew level at 14-14. The next hit would decide who got the medal. I dont actually remember what happened next, but my target light went off indicating I had hit Tom, giving me the point and the bronze medal!! Get in!!
Sunday really wasnt Tom's day, as it was also the day the results from the committee elections were being announced. Both myself and Tom were going for the postition of Captain of the Men's 1st Team. Suffice to say, I got the position, meaning Tom actually lost twice to me that day!
