Hasn't this gone a bit too far?

Driving home today, I heard on 99.1 the final names of roads in Southlands to be named in honor of Brad Gushue's curling team:
Gold Medal Drive with 6 roads off of that road called...Brad Gushue Crescent, Mark Nichols Place, Russ Howard Street, Jamie Korab Street, Mike Adam Place and Toby McDonald Street.

Brad's family lives in Southlands...I wonder if they'll move to Brad Gushue Crescent??

After that, the DJ mentioned that Danny Williams announced that Bifurcation Road, scheduled to open this spring is going to be called: Team Gushue Highway, then he said Danny has also nominated them for the Order of Newfoundland, and is naming a Sport Newfoundland Scholarship after them.

So, at first I though the Order of Newfoundland was a bit crazy, so I came home and read about the award, and found this:
"The object of the Order is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner Newfoundland and Labrador and its residents."

Thats cool then. Except it says groups cannot get the award, so I guess they will all be given the award individually. Russ Howard isn't a Newfoundlander...is he still gonna get the award?

The roads in Southlands is understandable, but what gets me is what they have re-named Birfurcation Road (they are gonna have to redo all the highway signs already standing). Team Gushue Highway?? I think thats going a bit to far. They could have easily called the main road in Southlands Team Gushue Drive, and re-named the Bifurcation Road Gold Medal Highway, or Olympic Highway, or something along those lines. It's a stupid name if you ask me.

The scholarship is a great idea. You hear of stuff like that happening often.

Fine, the boys won the first Gold Medal for this province, and the first Gold Medal for Canada in Men's Curling. But, what is going to happen when all our up and coming athletes go to the olympics in the future and bring back a medal...maybe Gold. Are we gonna start naming roads after them? Are we gonna give them all the Order of Newfoundland?

To me it's just an Olympic Medal...ya, the highest accolade in sport. But we have to draw a line somewhere. Cindy Klassen won 5 medals in Torino. It'll be interesting to see if she gets any order, or major highway named after her.

I know I'm gonna get heat about this.
