Yesterday K and I saw two films about religion that are sure to shake you up and make you think. I highly recommend both:
Jesus Camp -- A documentary about an evangelical Christian children's camp in North Dakota. I think that most of the Tribeca Film Festival audience was horrified (myself included) but it's quite a testament to the filmmakers' ability to remain neutral that the pastor featured in the film apparently loves it and plans to use it to promote the camp. I walked out of the theatre feeling enormously defeated and rattled to the core, but it was incredibly illuminating.
Water -- I *heart* Deepa Mehta. The third in her trilogy, a continuation of her theme of forbidden love and the ways that the human spirit manages to sacrifice and endure despite the influences of those who try to crush you. If you haven't seen Fire and Earth, see those too, in no particular order. This particular installment is about widows in an Ashram in India in 1938. Beautiful and tragic. Her cinematography and storytelling is outstanding.
