Last night, Kris and I watched Special. It's an independent film that's out in limited release right now, but if you have Time Warner, you can order it on HD Movies on Demand.
This movie is fantastic. It's one of the best films I've seen in a few years. Michael Rapaport plays a man who takes part in a medical trial, testing a drug that reduces self doubt. He ends up becoming a sort of superhero. Sort of. Not really.
But the movie is beautiful. It's touching and insightful. It's thought-provoking. At times, it was hilarious and had us doubled over laughing, but at other times, it was heartbreaking, and had me near tears. And in the end, it was uplifting, but not in a way that felt fake or forced. I can only sum it up as humane.
I know the Academy largely ignores films like this, and that is a shame, because it is such a gem. Rapaport was brilliant, and if this had been tied to some big studio with some big name director, he'd be in the running for a Best Actor nod. Probably wouldn't win it, but he would at least get a nod.
The best I can do is urge people to see this. Please see this!!
