Day Eight - Casualties

Sep 27, 2008 03:18

Who: Ice, Jake, Johnny, Cameron, River
When: Directly after the reaver fight
Where: the area in front of the dorms/town hall
Rating: PG-13 for death

Status: Closed/completed
Summary: Ice and Jake and a scattering of others remain on the battlefield in the direct aftermath of the fight. Ice passes Charlie's body into Johnny's care while she takes care of what few reavers remain wounded but alive on the field.

Meanwhile, Jake is confronted by River who manages to put both him and Cameron on the defensive (at least as defensive as she can get) by proclaiming Cameron is not real. Jake is pretty much confused by River's speech and meaning, though Oy seems to have taken a liking to her.

When Jake offers to help River find her room, Cameron takes her leave, and River runs off - apparently for a game of hide and seek. Feeling obligated, Jake walks with River toward the dorms, though they change course when she expresses her interest in finding Simon (who Jake doesn't know), and Mal (who Jake knows is in the infirmary). The thread then continues here.

When the brief but bloody battle had reached its end, Ice surveyed the field. One of theirs fall. A new arrival. A few wounded, but nothing life threatening as far as she could see. Chase looked worn, and dizzy, but rather pleased with himself.

When he caught her eye, Ice nodded slightly to him.

Kneeling, she wiped her blades on the grass before she sheathed them. Slowly, she crossed to Charlie's broken body. She should be taken care of, Ice reasoned. They should bury her properly. Perhaps a funeral was in order. Glancing around, she looked to see who would claim Charlie's body, make whatever decisions needed making. If no one did, she'd take care of it herself.

Jake was looking around to see who remained, and who had fallen. If he was being honest, he wasn't surprised by Charlie's death. Saddened, yes, but not surprised. She was no warrior. She shouldn't have been out there. His lips pulled into a thin, grim line before they panned over the corpses. They were hideous looking, these reavers, and he shuddered once.

Perhaps in mimicry, perhaps because he'd drawn the same conclusion, Oy shuddered as well.

Jake watched as some of the others started to file off the field in pairs or small groups, and he frowned before scanning for Cameron.
