Author’s Note: So I needed to take another break from my
dc_everafter fic and I saw this prompt on the
spn_balthazar comment fic meme for a prompt by
lookatmyjunk . It got a little lengthy. Here is the
prompt: Balthazar/Castiel/Dean = Balthazar, in a rare display of unselfish behavior, saves Dean and/or Castiel because of how much Cas means to him.
Not necessarily romantic.
Balthazar!
Balthazar, I know you hear me, you bastard.
Balthazar, you son of a bitch!
Balthazar sat at the piano with a smirk and continued to play. He had been ignoring Dean for about half an hour. He had to give the human credit, though. He thought that Dean would have just called for Castiel after ten minutes.
That wasn’t the case.
Dean continued to pray… yell at Balthazar. On one hand, it was entertaining to hear the desperation in his voice. On the other, the human’s voice was grating and it kept causing him to continue to mess up the piece he was trying to get through. He had started over three times so far.
Balthazar, we need your help.
Stop being an ass and get over here.
Balthazar kept his hands on the piano. His fingers ran up and down the keys as he played the sonata from memory. He was getting use to the incessant voice as it was the furthest he had gotten so far.
Balthazar, please.
The ‘please’ caused Balthazar to stumble. He slammed his hands down on the keys. He knew that he wasn’t going to get through the piece. Not today.
He knew that whatever situation the oldest Winchester had gotten into must have been bad if he was begging him for help. He knew how proud the human could be. But he had to wonder why he was turning to him and not to Castiel.
Then he thought of how disappointed Castiel would be in him if he had just continued to ignore the human’s pleas. He sighed, hating how much Castiel cared for Dean, which in turn made him have to care for Dean just to make his brother happy.
Balthazar, please. You’re the only person that can help us right now.
He pulled the cover over the keys.
As much as he disliked the human, he appreciated his ability to put aside his pride for a second to ask someone, who he didn’t have the best relationship with, for help.
He laced his fingers and closed his eyes to pinpoint the location that the prayers were coming from. As soon as he found it, he spread his wings and flew.
He landed in the dark and was confused as to where he was. He loosened his grace a little and added light to the dark place he was. He found Dean in standing a few feet away from him. “What are you doing in a cave?”
Dean spun around and glared at the angel. “Thanks a lot, ass. Half a damn hour later.”
“I’m here, aren’t I? I could always just leave you here.”
“No,” Dean said quickly. “I… thanks for coming.”
Balthazar could only imagine how painful it was for Dean to say those words. “I’d say it’s a pleasure to be here, but it’s not.” He looked around the cave for the other Winchester. “Where’s your brother?” he asked.
“We split up.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone. “And my phone doesn’t work down here.”
“Okay, so how did you end up in a cave?”
“We were hunting these demons. We exorcised them, then the next thing we knew, these dicks appeared out of nowhere ready to kill us.”
“Who came after you?”
“Some douches named Zadakiel and Ramiel or some crap like that.”
Balthazar had come across those angels a few times. “They’re working for Raphael,” he said to himself.
“Yeah, we got that,” Dean said. “So me and Sam hauled ass as fast as we could.”
“And you ended up in a cave?”
“It wasn’t in the plan. But Cas found me and I told him to make sure Sam was safe. Then I ducked into a cave that collapsed. And then I was trapped.”
“So, where is Castiel?”
“You… you can’t feel him?” Dean whispered. He looked shocked.
Balthazar shook his head. “If he’s off doing his civil war thing, then I can’t usually keep a lock on him.”
“He’s here. In the cave.”
“Then what am I doing here?” he yelled. There was no reason for him to be in the cave if Castiel was there too. Castiel could do just as much if not more now that his powers were reinstated. “I’m lea-”
“He can’t leave,” Dean interrupted before Balthazar could fly away.
“Why not?”
Dean stepped out of the way. “Because he’s trapped.”
Balthazar’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Tons of emotions flooded through him: shock, anger, fear, worry, confusion. He ran over to Castiel and knelt beside him. “Castiel,” he said, putting a hand on his shoulder.
Balthazar figured that Castiel was either resting or unconscious since his eyes were closed and he didn’t answer him. He looked down his brother’s body and saw that he couldn’t see anything passed his hips. The cave had fallen on him.
“He said that he was trying to preserve his grace.”
“Why is he still under there?”
“He said that Ramiel did something to his grace and cut his wings or some crap like that.”
Balthazar stood up and charged Dean. “And again, he’s risking himself to save you,” he yelled. It echoed loudly through the cave.
“I didn’t ask him to,” Dean yelled back.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“Balthazar, do not yell at him,” Castiel said. Both Dean and Balthazar turned to look at Castiel, surprised that he was awake. “This was my doing.”
“Cas, shut up,” Dean said.
“I should have known that Raphael was going to send someone else after you.”
“Well, I should have known that too.”
Castiel swallowed hard and Balthazar and Dean watched as his adam’s apple bobbed up and down to do so. He made eye contact with Dean. “Are you all right?”
“I’m not the one trapped under a freaking cave wall, Cas.” Dean sighed. “Can you do something to help him?” he asked Balthazar.
“No,” Castiel whispered. “Get Dean to safety, first.”
“No,” Dean said, adamant.
“I agree with the human.”
“I’m with two angels. I can’t get any safer than this.”
“There are more important things than the human’s safety, Cas.”
“Balthazar. You cannot heal the wounds that are weakening me. Make sure Dean and Sam are safe. Then you can come back and worry about me.”
“He is not my priority,” he said pointing to Dean.
“But he’s mine,” Castiel whispered.
Balthazar let out a long and pained sigh. He couldn’t argue with his brother when he was like that. Not when he was young and definitely not now. “I want to heal you first. Can I at least move you?”
Castiel shook his head, stirring up some dirt. “I don’t know how that will affect the structure of this cave. It could collapse on all of us. It would be safest to fly Dean out of here, then come back for me when you know that they’re safe.”
“He means that much to you?”
“You wouldn’t understand, Balthazar.”
“You cannot say that to me, Castiel.”
“Please.”
“Fine.” He turned and glared at Dean. He grabbed Dean by the arm. “We’re going.”
“No,” Dean said, pulling his arm out of the angel’s grasp. “You’re crazy if you think that I’m just going to leave.”
“Listen to me, human,” he yelled. “He refuses to let me help him until you’re safe. The faster I get you out of here and make sure you and your brother are all right, the faster I can come back here and save mine. Fighting with me delays me helping him.”
Dean looked down at Castiel. “I don’t feel right leaving him there.”
“Neither do I.”
“I’ll be fine,” Castiel said.
“It’s a good thing he’s a horrible liar,” Balthazar said. “I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
Castiel looked at Balthazar and nodded. “Go.”
“Cas,” Dean whispered.
“I’ll come to you as soon as Balthazar gets me free.”
“You better. Let’s go,” Dean said.
Balthazar grabbed Dean’s arm and flew Dean out of the cave. As he flew, he searched Dean’s thoughts for where to drop him off. He found the location of the motel the brothers were staying at.
As soon as they landed, Dean looked around, searching for his brother. When he didn’t find him, he pulled out his phone and called Sam. He was relieved to find that Castiel had flown Sam to Bobby’s and set up wards to keep him safe. They’d meet up a few days later.
He hung up the phone and looked at Balthazar. “Okay, I’m safe, Sam is safe. Go get Cas.”
“You need to set up wards.”
“They’re set up,” Dean said strongly. He pointed at all of the walls. “The only reason you knew where to go was because you were surfing around in my mind. Now go get him and bring him here.”
“Why would I do that?” He had every intention of taking Castiel back to his mansion to rest. He’d be the one to help his brother heal.
“Because Cas said that he would come to me once you got him. And Cas doesn’t break his promises.”
Balthazar was about to argue, but he knew that Dean was right. “I’ll bring him back here,” he said. Then disappeared.
He reappeared in the cave and walked back to where Castiel was trapped. He knelt down and saw that the angel had fallen asleep.
“Castiel,” he whispered. He put a hand on Castiel’s chest and shook him gently.
Slowly Castiel’s eyes opened. He tried to stretch, but he grunted and froze when pain shot through him. When the pain faded, he looked to Balthazar. “Are they safe?” he whispered.
“Yes, brother. They’re safe. Sam is where you left him and Dean’s warded the motel room.”
“Good. How long were you gone?”
“A few hours. I made sure the wards held,” Balthazar lied. If Castiel had fallen asleep, then he had no idea how much time had elapsed since they left. He didn’t feel bad about not telling him the truth.
“Okay.”
Balthazar was glad that Castiel didn’t question his response. “Now let’s get you out of here.” He looked down at the rocks crushed Castiel’s legs. “It’s going to hurt,” he whispered. He knew that his brother’s grace wasn’t working correctly if he wasn’t able to fly out there on his own. He knew that Castiel was in pain, even though he tried to hide it. Castiel’s eyes could never lie.
“That’s all right,” he replied.
He took Castiel’s face in his hands and looked into his eyes. “You ready?”
Castiel nodded. “Yes,” he whispered.
“I’m sorry,” Balthazar whispered before he closed his eyes.
He flew them right outside of the cave. As soon as they were tangible again, Castiel let out an ear-piercing scream. Castiel bit his lip to keep himself from screaming, again, but it didn’t work.
That was the reason that Balthazar didn’t fly them immediately to the motel. He knew that if someone heard those screams that there would be cops involved somehow.
Without thinking, Balthazar put his hands on Castiel’s knees and concentrated on mending his brother’s vessel’s legs. He did his best to ignore his brother’s screams that died down into whimpers. He tried to work as fast as he could. The moment seemed to go on for hours, but it was nowhere near that long.
By the time he was done, Castiel was breathing hard and his face was drenched with sweat. Small shivers ran through his body. His eyes were closed, but Balthazar wasn’t worried. Well, not as much.
Castiel opened his eyes and looked around. “Balthazar?” he asked.
And Balthazar was brought back to when they were fledglings and Castiel used to as him for help for something. That was his youngest. And he would never forget it.
He brushed his fingers through his brother’s hair. “You’re all right, youngest,” he whispered. “Just rest.”
“I need to-” Castiel didn’t get a chance to finish his statement when Balthazar put two fingers to his brother’s forehead and put him to sleep.
Balthazar slid his hands under Castiel’s back and knees. With a sigh of relief knowing that Castiel was safe, he flew. To his own surprise, he didn’t fly straight to his mansion.
As soon as they landed in the motel, Dean jumped out of the bed he was lying in. “What took you so long?”
“I had to heal him.”
“Is he okay?”
Balthazar knew what was going on through Dean’s head. It was a little unnerving to see Castiel unconscious. “I cannot heal what Zadakiel and Ramiel did to him. His wings and grace are going to take a little longer to fix, but his legs still work.”
“So why isn’t he awake?”
“Because he needs to rest. He’s been constantly on the move and working since he rescued you from Hell. I’m not above forcing him to sleep.”
“Good,” Dean said, agreeing with Balthazar’s methods. “You can put him down on my bed.”
Balthazar walked over and gently laid Castiel on the bed. With a snap of his fingers, Castiel’s coat and suit jacket appeared on the table in the room and Castiel had made his way under the covers.
Dean walked over and climbed into the other side of the same bed. He put a hand on Castiel’s arm, needing to make sure that he was actually there.
Balthazar didn’t say anything about the small display of affection. He would have done the same thing if he and Castiel were in his mansion. He stared at Castiel in bed with Dean and he knew that his brother was safe. He didn’t have to worry about him while he went off for a little while. He let out his wings, preparing to leave.
“Where are you going?” Dean asked when he heard the sound of wings flapping softly.
“I’m going to chat with Ramiel and Zadakiel.”
“Balthazar.”
“What?” Balthazar snapped.
“Cas wouldn’t want you-”
“I don’t care,” he yelled. He didn’t. He hated killing his brothers, but as soon as they went after Castiel, then it didn’t matter.
“Balthazar,” Dean scolded through gritted teeth when Castiel flinched on the bed. He really didn’t want Castiel to wake up, not after Balthazar got him to sleep.
Balthazar looked away. He felt guilty that he had almost woken up Castiel. He took a breath or two to calm down. “You can’t stop me.”
“I’m not going to. I just wanted to tell you to make it hurt.”
“That was a guarantee. I’ll be back. Make sure he stays rested.”
“Can do.”
“I’ll return when I’m done.”
“Okay.”
Without another word, Balthazar flew and landed where he had healed Castiel not even an hour earlier. He closed his eyes and laced his fingers together resting them on his forehead. He flew to where Ramiel and Zadakiel were as soon as he found them.
