84 hours since the infection spread.

They ended up falling asleep on the roof of the car park, and when Alex woke up he had no idea what time it was, but he was pretty sure it must’ve been mid-afternoon. Then he realized that time didn’t even matter anymore. Why would they need time? Time was something created by humans, and Alex was pretty sure that there weren’t very many of those left.

He also realised that him and Jack were a bit too close for comfort. Well for Jacks’s comfort anyway, though when Alex thought about it Jack wasn’t really his type. He was a stoner, a dropout, and he was going to amount to nothing. At least, that’s what Alex always thought about Jack and his friends, but for now, he had to forget all his prejudice about Jack, because he was all Alex had right now, he couldn’t lose him.

Soon though, Jack woke up, and nearly threw himself off the roof in order to get away from Alex as quickly as possible.

“Dude! What the fuck man, tryin’ to gay me up in my sleep is that what this is?!” he spat, but Alex just laughed.

“You’re so naïve Jack, don’t you know that gay people aren’t attracted to every guy they see? And anyway, I believe that it was you snuggling up to me while you were asleep, so suck on that straight boy”

“Fuck you man” Jack said, blushing, before grabbing his bag and storming toward the stairwell. Alex took the rest of their stuff and followed him, still laughing. He’d laughed a lot in the past few days, considering the situation. It felt nice though, like maybe everything wasn’t as bad as it may seem.

When they got back to the car, they put all their stuff inside and then got in themselves before strapping in and heading off. In all honesty, they didn’t really know where they were, but they had basically just been heading west from their home in Maryland. It just seemed like the further they could get from the freaks, the better, and west was the obvious way to go, since swimming the Atlantic Ocean probably wasn’t a good idea.

They’d been driving in silence for about an hour, both boys lost in their own thoughts. Alex had volunteered to drive, since Jack had done most of the driving so far, and he liked to drive because normally it would take your mind off of whatever problems you had. But that wasn’t working this time. There was nothing to distract him, nothing to concentrate on. It was just their vehicle and an empty road. He tried to stop himself thinking about it all. He really did, but before he knew it, the tears were basically blinding him, and he was pulling over, opening the door, and practically running into the woods beside the freeway.

Jack sat for a minute, trying to keep his cool, nonchalant persona, but he knew he couldn’t leave Alex alone. The boy was clearly unstable, and as much as he didn’t know why he cared, Jack didn’t really want him to go and do something stupid.

So, he followed him into the trees, and he didn’t get far before he spotted him sitting on a fallen tree trunk, staring at the ground and wiping his eyes and nose every so often. Again, Jack hesitated before approaching him, but he did it anyway, and he still wasn’t really sure why.

Alex had heard Jack’s footsteps behind him, but he made no effort to hide his tears, what did it matter anyway? Jack came and sat next to him on the tree, and they sat in silence for a moment before Jack spoke.

“I’m gonna be honest dude, I don’t really know how to make you feel better.” He stated, looking up at the same time as Alex did, and they caught each other’s eye. For a second, they stayed like that, just staring, before Jack coughed and looked away. He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, and coughed again.

Alex laughed, but his laugh was devoid of humour. “You know, for a badass mother fucker Jack, you sure are one awkward boy.” And he laughed again, before he leant his head on Jack’s shoulder. The younger boy’s first reaction was to flinch away from Alex, but then, for some strange reason. He didn’t. He just stayed.

So they sat like that for a while, and at some point Jack put his arm around Alex’s shoulders, and Alex put his arm around Jack’s waist, and it was nice. Jack didn’t even care that he was snuggling with another guy, because he liked it, he liked the feel of Alex’s head on his shoulder, and the way his soft hair was kind of tickling Jack’s chin. He liked the way Alex’s arm fit around his hip, the way his hand was warm and soft against the exposed skin where Jack’s shirt had ridden up.

Then, without even thinking about it, Jack leaned down and pressed his lips against Alex’s hair, and the older boy breathed a sigh of satisfaction, before snuggling closer to Jack and closing his eyes. Then, Jack leant his head on Alex’s, and time passed, but he wasn’t keeping track because if he could have it his way, he’d stay like this forever.
