and in an effort to do pretty much anything else, I have decided to do this. Well, I mean, I guess I will kill two birds with one stone.
so William James talks about using religion as a tool. if you don't want to stress about anything anymore, like his worry that he had no free will and every action was biologically determined, believe in something. James decided he would believe in free will, and by choosing to believe in free will, he exercised his free will.
my question: this is a great idea, how do i get in on this? I am pretty sure that I have free will, so there is no need to cultivate that belief. But otherwise, how do I decide to "use" god (famous quotation: "god can not be known, god can not be understood; god can only be used.")? Blarg, pragmatism is (a) rather difficult to understand because Pierce, James, Holmes, and Dewey are all ridiculous writers and (b) because I can intellectually agree with most of it, but in practice, find it hard to follow through.
Tomorrow night is the Tabard Lingerie show, then homecoming begins, disco on saturday night, etc.
