Now, on to DC. Sorry, I don't really have any hidden gems. By now you know all about Adams Morgan (and Madam's Organ). The zoo is fun (and free) year round. We lived over by U Street/Cardozo, so our local bar was Bohemian Caverns. A little out of the way for you, but definitely worth checking out. It's an underground bar made to look like, well, caverns. They have a half-price belgian beer night, Tuesday I think, which is the only time we could afford to drink there. Then once you're good and drunk you can hit up Ben's Chili Bowl on your way home. Busboys and Poets isn't too far and it's a great restaurant/coffeeshop/bookstore/musicvenue. They even have homeless poetry night. Georgetown is glamorous but hella pricey (same for Dupont Circle). A nice upscale place to get drunk is Mien Yu. Old Glory and Sequoia are both great for not-too-crazy-expensive Sunday brunch. Oh, that's another thing, DC folk are crazy about Sunday brunch for some reason.
And do me a favor, PLEASE take advantage of EVERYthing the Smithsonian has to offer. It's free for Christ sake. I kick myself daily for not doing more while I lived there.
