SO I'm trying to get my ID- you know, a valid picture ID that lets me do little things like, oh, say, get on the plane to travel back and forth to college, among other things.

In order to to do this, the DMV wants somehwere around 27 (okay, really 4) proofs of identity including
a the driver's lisence/ID that I need them to give me and
b)my social security card.

my social security card has somehow been lost. SO I have to replace it. In order to do this, guess what I need! that's right- the ID from the DMV that I need my social security card to get.

but we talked to all of the agencies and figured out what needs to happen- I fill out the form the the SSA for a replacement card, which won't arrive for a few weeks. but I need the ID now. so the SSA will print out a recipt, which I will take to the DMV- they will take this, along with the carton of papers that I need to provide verifying tht I am who I say I am and I haven't forged the last 18 years of my life. Okay. then, the DMV gives me a temporary ID and mails me the real one in a few weeks. Great.

SO I'm awakened this morning at a positively ungodly hour to go in to the SSA. I fill out the forms, take them up to the window, the guy reviews it and says "you're good, let me just print the receipt you need to take to the DMV."

okay- we're on our way! Or at least, we would be if the entire computer system running Social security hadn't died. yes, that's right- today, the computer and communications system for the whole of Social security- the Continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, you name it, is out. so no receipt. So No DMV. and No ID- at least, not today. which means another ungodly early morning and more hours of waiting tomorrow.

Oh, the joy that is bureacracy.
