"Having someone wonder where you are when you don't come home at night is a very old human need."

She can never get the bed warm enough to make up for Peter's absence, but she tries. She wears his clothes in layers. Sweatpants, wife beater, and a sweatshirt. The scent is familiar, but it is nothing like having someone to sleep next to.

Next to, on top of, or sometimes a combination of the two. They change things up when they can. The bedroom is the place they retreat to when all hell breaks loose. It's always been that to them, ever since the night Peter "died" and sent his brother's jet so that she could come over and ream him out in person. That didn't go the way she planned. She's not nearly as good at grudges as she is at trying to comfort her friends.

Peter always needed the support more than anyone else. Maybe it's because she never knew him before his abilities kicked in, or his parents ignored him too much when he was little. She holds his hand and he visibly calms down. She gives him a hug and he holds on for dear life. It's always been that way, it has just progressed over the course of their two year relationship, the way it was supposed to. Give and take.

It rubbed off on her.

The bed is ridiculously cold when she's by herself. Henry sleeps in his own room for several reasons, though she is usually tempted to let him sleep in hers. She doesn't want him to expect it when Peter gets back, she wants him to feel safe on his room. And she also wants to be independent enough to sleep in a bed without needing someone to curl up with. Tex has even traded her for the toddler in the next room.

She always gets to sleep eventually. It takes longer now because her thoughts keep her awake. But, if she tries hard enough, she gets four hours and tries not to feel guilty for attempting to keep things as normal as possible. She's the stable one. It was true before, and now that Henry is in their lives, she has to do everything in her power to make sure that things stay that way. He motivates her by being there.

He keeps her busy and gets her mind off of what's happening to Peter.

She's still sleeping in an empty bed. And she doesn't have to think about what's going on to feel Peter's absence, because that's one of the things that never goes away. She knows she's expected to live with it, and she does. When she's happy, wishes he could be there to share it. When she's depressed, she wonders if he could make it better.

He needs her to wait for him. She wants him to come home.

She needs to learn to depend on herself in the meantime. She'll go blanket hunting in the closet. It's better than giving up.
