TM 173: Write a fan letter

To: Sanjaya Malakar, America Idol

Dear Sanjaya,

I am not exactly a fan of American Idol. I have never found reality television to have much in common with reality and I find the conceit of the show - the audience choosing their idol - problematic as the masses seldom know what is best for them. However, I have fond memories of watching the show with my friends when they were still my friends and because of that I have been following this season for its nostalgic value.

I know a number of people are outraged at your success because they do not consider you to be the best - or even a good - singer. There are even a number of people who are calling into question the credibility of the show. I find this ridiculous. I have never found American Idol to be particularly credible as a talent competition. Simon Cowell is delusional if he thinks how well someone sings is what his show is all about. American Idol is a popularity contest and you, Sanjaya, are extremely popular.

I understand your appeal; and don't let the fact that people are voting for you because they think you are the worst performer get you down. Every time the camera shows your pretty sister I remember that you chose to comfort her for her loss rather than celebrate your own spot in the semi-finals. That compassionate display of brotherly affection is worth more than ten million votes. It is, in fact, priceless.

Good luck, Sanjaya. I hope you win.
