Interesting that I feel I can remember a bit from your journal on your adventures in Italy, but it's been so long. Nevertheless, this entry really hits the original question's point: there's a definite sense of confidence and achievement at the end, that you really went through something and came back more sure of yourself than when you left. :)

LOL...I just read over some of my old posts--I sound so exhausted and irritated! Those little things kind of get forgotten in the long run. I enjoyed reading about your European trip as well!

I have been meaning to respond to this, I just haven't quite found the words yet.

To hear you talk about how far you've come and how much these, let's face it, incredible experiences overseas affected you is really inspiring. I am really happy for you that you got an adventure that gave you confidence and broadened your perspective.

I know Sarah Palin made that crack about never getting to backpack over Europe and Bill Maher had this great comeback that, to paraphrase said maybe if enough Americans actually did have that opportunity, we wouldn't be such an entirely insular and fucked up society. Because seeing other cultures only serves to make us better people, etc. I think he was right, and I would love to see more Americans (I don't say Canadians because I am just speculating that Americans need to broaden their minds a bit more) really be able to experience what he was talking about.
