i am overwhelmed, of course, and have taken on way too many tasks. i have so much to do i don't know where to start. today, i decided that in order to make myself more sane, i needed to sort through my papers, which are occupying every surface in the house in disorderly piles and arrangements that cannot quite be called piles. but i am living off the cuff right now, and when i went to get coffee from audrey's café, i invited her little boy back to the house. my roommate was making some delicious nut and raisin paste and gave him a lemon, and he stood on a chair and organized the erotic word magnets on the refrigerator - good thing he can't read them. i started sorting my papers. then he came and sat by me and picked up a halloween card my folks sent me. "what does this say?" he asked me. that, of course, turned into a reading lesson. he gets easily distracted though, and doesn't seem to have great visual memory. he also finds it really entertaining to keep giving the wrong answer when he really knows the right one, because he likes people's reactions. i did eventually teach him his vowels, though. we turned it into a rap song: AEIOU! i took him back to the café and he performed the rap for his mother. that was more rewarding than anything else i possibly could have done today.
