black hole AKA Balrog

i had a dream last night, then another dream in which i recounted the previous dream to someone.  when i woke up, i couldn't remember what happened in the first one anymore.

in possibly unrelated news, there are lots of apocalypse stories and predictions going around down here.  tales of the gulf floor beginning to collapse, tales of fissures forming that foreshadow a methane gas explosion.  out of general wistfulness and pragmatism i don't lend these stories much credit.  i don't believe in the apocalypse, and think that if one does happen, it will be a self-fulfilled prophesy - that the prophesizing itself, and the concept of manifest destiny, is dangerous.

but i couldn't help but imagine what it would be like, either 1) a sudden toxic gas cloud and tsunami from which no one could escape, 2) an evacuation of the entire gulf coast region spanning at least four states.  all of my apocalypse dreams with their sticky images flooded back to me.  i even remembered one, from at least a decade ago, featuring a dolphin trapped behind ice.  it was embedded in southwest-style red earth like dinosaur bones.  that image, which made no sense at the time - especially since it was in a dry, mountainous, post-apocalyptic location - now seems strangely ominous.

still, i chalk it up to fantasia and an overactive imagination produced by science-fiction stories and lifelong exposure to conspiracy theories.  after all, when i was a kid, i wrote a crappy little sci-fi story about a vain man who created a hole in the ocean floor, just because he could; it sort of exploded out and imploded in, sucking everything into itself, like a black hole.

sci-fi, oil, apocalypse, disaster, dreams
