02Canon Point: Post TNBA. Post RotJ flashback - with the AU twist, a few days after killing Batman. (Yes. Really.)
Setting: Joker Junior comes from a relatively modern Earth of the late 90s/early 2000s. Most things are the same as we know them to be, save for the very real presence of superheroes, anti-heroes, vigilantes, and villains. A few special people (metahumans) on this version of our planet have special powers like limitless flight, super speed, or inhuman strength. Some can call on extra help from the Other Side, or even utilize various forms of magic normal humans think to be fake or nonexistent. Others come from different planets or times, bent to either protect or destroy our little third rock from the sun. Others still have no powers whatsoever, but that doesn't stop them from joining the fray (it might even push them to be the most intense of the bunch, given how much they have to make up for in the "super" department).
One special place on Earth with a handful of these special people inhabiting it is Gotham City. An overpopulated American cesspool of pollution, corruption, violence, and crime, it's a wonder anyone still bothers to make a living here. Gotham has one key protector set on making things right, and almost everyone knows about him. The Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader - he's the goddamn Batman (also secretly billionaire "playboy" Bruce Wayne). Batman is a symbol of fear and order to the criminal and cowardly; a symbol of hope and justice to the weak and innocent.
Not as well known, but still important in the Good Fight, Batman has a few partners who help him patrol Gotham's streets and take down crazies. Nightwing (Dick Grayson), Bruce's first ward, a young man who donned the original Robin costume before finding his own path. Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), daughter of Gotham's police commissioner, resourceful and more than capable of kicking ass with the boys. The second Robin (Tim Drake), a street orphan who went from idolizing heroes to becoming one himself.
Within Gotham, young Tim Drake is known to the public media as Bruce Wayne's second ward. A "surrogate son" to Bruce, as described by his enemy Mr. Freeze, and a friend to the older Dick and Barbara. He's just an ordinary kid with ordinary school problems. By night he is - was - Robin, the Boy Wonder. Youngest member of the Batfamily, Batman's trustworthy partner, always up for heroics and taking down the bad guys.
Now, Joker Junior? He's a new addition to the city's list of the criminally insane and/or dangerous. A modified Robin, all upgrades thanks to Gotham's agent of chaos, the Joker, and his obsessive girlfriend, Harley Quinn. One part information bug, one part advanced backup copy, and one part devastating mindfuck, JJ's name is surely one Gotham will remember, once word of his hefty deeds spreads to the streets...
Personality: REARRANGE ORDER. Robin overview → Tim Drake overview → more deep-seated elaborations/interpretations (idolization, abandonment, Annie, disobedience?) → Joker Junior modifications
QUOTES IN NEW ORDER: intro from saving Annie? → dat civics test → drake talk → "so we borrowed one" :(
"Listen, kid. I'm a crook. It's what I do. And it's what you'll do someday, too. You gotta grow up and face the facts. People like us, we don't got no choice."
"Yes we do."
- The Batman Adventures: The Lost Years #4
Tim Drake started out as, to put things simply, a good kid living under bad circumstances. He was looked after by his crook of a father, Steven "Shifty" Drake, whom he had very little respect for, if he had any at all. His no-good dad might have spent his time robbing people and hurting others, but not Tim! He was one of the good guys, defending other kids getting bullied for their lunch money and playing superhero, much to his father's chagrin. He found better role models in Batman and Robin, the Dynamic Duo - or the Thrilling Threesome, when you add a wishful Tim to the equation. He believed in justice and choosing to do good, but when your father bails town like the coward he is, you do what you gotta do in order to survive. Tim only resorted to stealing food/money when there weren't any alternatives left to him. Circumstances aside, he always had a strong moral compass.
He was a good kid at heart, but that didn't mean he was a perfect boy scout, either. Tim had always been a toughy with attitude, which was smoothed out later by Bruce's better upbringing. He wasn't above name-calling (i.e. Puke Face), and he had an early tendency to lie in order to cover his ass. During their first encounter, Tim told Bruce he could "trust him" - after attempting to steal a pricey watch and money clip.
As Robin, there were several instances of disobedience, but all with good intention.
--------
Even before he abandoned his own son to avoid trouble with Two-Face, Shifty Drake was barely around. Tim didn't have the best dad in the world, but he still wanted a dad; it hurt him enough when Drake left that the boy used to plead for him in his sleep.
"Just like Batman, nobody messes with Tim Drake!"
[ TIM / ROBIN ]
- quick/inventive/resourceful thinker even before any formal training; uses the surrounding environment to his advantage (Sins of the Father, Growing Pains)
- stole out of necessity (food to eat in Sins of the Father, money from Bruce to survive)
Tim's not just all tough and talk - he's smart, too. He has a decent mix of book smarts and street smarts, stronger with the latter. If that one failed civics test says anything, when he doesn't like something, he won't put effort in it. He does have the capability to work hard and learn fast, shown through his determination while training to be Robin.
In canon, Tim lacks the etiquette and refinement of a Wayne socialite. He hates slow dancing (gross), and his
manners could use some improvement. They aren't exactly useful to him or high on his priority list, so eh, who cares? His dad wasn't a great role model or a stickler on manners.
- "hero" traits: courageous, tough, doesn't give up
- doesn't like being treated like a kid (despite him being one) or told what he can't do, especially on the field
- Some interest in girls? He can be nice! Can get along with other kids. ...Baww, Annie. ;_;
- doesn't rely on others, likes being independent
^ sometimes bites off more than he can chew because of the above
- against killing (Never Fear)
- Disobedience (sneaking out to follow biological dad, not always listening to Batman), but with good intentions
- Always against killing, even criminals that others might think "deserve it". Broke down when he killed Joker (in canon); went too far.
Transformed into a crude, younger version of the Joker, Tim's character took a turn for the worse post-TNBA. Three weeks of torture at the hands of the craziest man in Gotham is bound to make you crazy, too. Joker Junior is a giggling, grinning wreck of a boy, a shell and mockery of his former self. He's been conditioned to hurt the ones he loved instead of help them, damage instead of protect.
Tim Drake/Robin is still there somewhere, underneath the purple suit and face paint (that better be just face paint), but a lot of horrific conditioning keeps him buried. There's visible hesitation and struggling when Joker tells him to shoot Batman, so he isn't a mindless drone. Judging by the way he tried to run to mama Harley's side after Batgirl knocked her to the floor, JJ still has a heart, too - some twisted form of care or concern for Harley, the lesser of two evils. To this day, JJ still refuses to kill. Batman's death was... a horrible, horrible fluke he'll never repeat. He tries to resist the conditioned urge to hurt others when it gets too far, and should be able to keep the blood off his hands so long as he doesn't receive any outside encouragement.
With the AU twist, hate for the Robin persona stems from JJ's hate for himself. He couldn't live up to the role of the Boy Wonder and failed in so many ways. Robin dropped his guard that night in the alley, got himself captured, and everything just snowballed from there. Robin couldn't apprehend the bad guys and escape, resulting in three weeks of hell. Robin broke down and spilled a lot of valuable information, too weak in body and mind to endure and keep the secrets of the Batfamily safe.
Tim Drake is still there, somewhere, but God help you if you want to try bringing him back.
Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions: - No Metahuman Powers: Anything Tim's capable of doing is within the limits of a normal human his age and size. You know, with enough hardcore training and nonstop dedication.
- Combat and Agility Training: Defensive, offensive, and evasive skills are thanks to Batman. Most of it still retained in JJ's AU, but he isn't at his peak skill level due to lack of consistent practice. He can knock out an amateur that tries to pick a fight with him, and while his acrobatics aren't as fancy as Nightwing's, they still get the job done.
- Detective Skills: Something Batman used to help Tim hone while tracking down and stopping criminals, reminiscent of his comic book counterpart. No longer used or viewed as useful due to JJ's insanity.
- Basic Gun Training: Thanks to Joker and Harley Quinn, JJ now has a beginner's knowledge of firearms. Using a real gun of his own will, however, might be difficult as he tries to cling to his old moral codes.
- Implanted Joker DNA and Memories: Something latent, advanced genetic shit embedded in a microchip at the base of JJ's skull. A twisted backup save! Overall harmless at his young age, though it fucks him up real bad by Return of the Joker.
Stemming from his AU, Joker Junior can be easily apprehended with items and techniques that remind him of his time spent with the Joker. Want to keep the crazy clown kid at bay? Dress up like a doctor with sharp objects and offer to help "fix" him. Need to make it out alive in one piece? An electric shock or two would be super effective!
In some part thanks to Harley, children's lullabies have a soothing/taming effect on JJ (i.e. Hush Little Baby). Good for distracting him and minimizing fits of rage or distress. Not as effective as a shock to the system, but hey, whatever works.
Not sure if there's anything worth limiting. After all, he's just a harmless little kid.
Inventory: Expanding his gear in a creative manner. Surely JJ deserves a treat after all he's done for daddy dearest, right? And the Joker has much cooler toys than the Bats! Most of the items listed below have limited shots/stock/charges, so the kid shouldn't go too crazy with the equipment if he wants them to last.
- flag gun
- green boutonniere filled with Joker's laughing gas
- a concealed knife or two
- shock buzzer
- razor joker playing cards (to replace the batarangs)
- exploding marbles (to replace the smoke bombs)
JJ might try to find the following things in Sacrosanct at some point or another, just to give the mods a heads up:
- crayons and coloring books, fun kid shit like that
- some more knives
- a ragdoll that he'll name after
dear Annie :(
- a bazooka, maybe
Appearance: Creepiest clown child you ever did see! Dark green, slicked back hair. Dark red lips. Red eyes, complete with dark circles. Pale white skin. Awful clashing clown suit. JJ's kind of short for his age, and fit thanks to Robin training, but lacking muscle mass. For some actual images, here's
Tim in old civilian clothes,
Robin in his former glory, and charming little
Joker Junior.
Age: No age officially stated; putting him at about 14.
OC/AU Justification ;
If AU, How is Your Version Different From Canon, and How Will That Come Across? During the flashback scene in Return of the Joker, JJ was given the opportunity to shoot an injured and vulnerable Batman. It was a difficult moment for the boy filled with much hysteric laughter and an unsure hand. Thankfully, he fought against all the horrible torture and conditioning imposed on him during the past three weeks, shooting the Joker instead. Cue the death of Batman's arch nemesis and the emotional breakdown of his young partner.
Like the horrible, twisted person the mun is, this AU alters JJ's decision, having him shoot and kill Batman. The Joker's influence was just strong enough to overcome his conscience in that crucial moment. There was a breakdown afterward similar to the one in canon, but some loving shock therapy and wholesome psychotropic medicine from Daddy J fixed him right up. Mostly. Somewhat.
Killing his hero Batman - his father, Bruce - was a sort of "point of no return". It had a massive impact on Tim's psyche, something the Joker took full advantage of now that Gotham's knight was out of the way. (Maybe abused, even, because goddammit, the little brat stole his thunder! He wasn't going for the Killing Joke here!) JJ ended the life of the man Gotham needed most, the one man who would've had the abilities and resources available to help him regain a relatively normal life. Even if he could escape Joker's grasp and seek outside help, who would want to rehabilitate him after what he did? What city would want a bird for a hero that killed its bat?
A part of the boy, just barely sane, thinks that a life of crime with a psycho clown family might be all that's left for him. Nevermind the fact that Mama Harley's probably dead at the bottom of a pit now. There are families that only have a daddy, so his still counts!
The Joker Junior persona has become more permanent, but conflicting views of him, Tim Drake, and Robin continue to bubble beneath the surface, coming and going. Recent torture, freshly committed murder, and the Joker's constant presence (turning into microchip form once on Sacrosanct) prevent the boy's immediate recovery. With the absolute best care afforded to him in canon, it took a full year for Tim to "recover", though he was never the same afterward. With this AU, it's difficult to say how long it would take without any outside help, if he can recover at all.
The JJ coming to Sacrosanct will act in a manner relatively similar to the one seen in Return of the Joker. There would be more variety to his shenanigans, and actual speaking, too, since he won't be limited to ten minutes of screen time. He'd be a troublemaker for sure, but without his new daddy looming over him, he might not be as inclined to perform the most heinous of crimes. Then again, no Harley Quinn means he'll also be lacking the (twisted) care and comfort afforded to him during his "upbringing", further adding to the unstable, psycho clown kid mix of what-the-fuckery.

[There's a message from a young boy gracing today's network. He sure sounds... cheerful. And maybe just a touch bit unsettling. Boys don't normally sound like that, do they?]
Daddy, can you come pick me up? I-
[An abrupt cut, followed by a deafening crash. Debris falling in the Junkyard? The boy's still there, judging by the playful giggle. Oops, sorry, minor distraction.]
I think I got lost. Hehe.
