If it ever comes up, this is when I decided you were one of the funniest people I never met:
I HAVE FOUR TONYS!!! TALE AS OLD AS TIME!!! Oh, fuck you all.

Oh and (it's no brown and sticky, but it's pretty close!)
A STICK!!!

Ok, so what are your top five books?

Hee. You flatter me!

GOD I love that sticky joke.

(There's a second one: "What's brown and slippery?" "A SLIPPER!" which is also funny.)

>Ok, so what are your top five books?

Hmm. Well, Gravity's Rainbow is number one. To Kill a Mockingbird is in there. Uh. Uh. All Quiet on the Western Front was probably the best piece of fiction I read in college. Um. Uh. I really liked V. when I just re-read it a couple months ago. That four right? Um. Gimme a bit to think.

What're your five?

Wanna hear a dirty joke?
A boy fell in the mud!

Hm. My five would probably be more contemporary than youre five...(All Quiet on the Western Front? Seriously? Are all your books that depressing?)

I'm sure as soon as I press the submit button they'll change...

1) About a Boy by Nick Hornby
2) American Gods by Neil Gaiman
3) A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
4) Naked by David Sedaris
5) Monkeewrench by PJ Tracey

I'm not sure any of those were written before I graduated high school...
I think I need to think about this more...maybe compile a list of all the books I've read in school to see if any of them were favorites...it's been a while...This might be a fun project.

Yeah, I totally need to go back and look at my bookshelf to see if there are any I've missed, and I'm sure there are.

Oh, I love modern literature, too. I just haven't read a lot of it. I know there've been a couple books that have come out recently, but I don't remember what they are, or if my love for them will stand the test of time, you know? Like, I love the Harry Potter books, but, I dunno. They're not favorite book material in my head. Also I like a lot of sci-fi, but I feel dorky admitting that.

>(All Quiet on the Western Front? Seriously? Are all your books that depressing?)

It was so good! You get all the way to the end and then BLAM!! Oh, man. Er, but, no. V. and Gravity's Rainbow are just bizarre, not depressing (although both of those end with someone dying, too, so maybe I am damaged!

You should read more Modern lit. Call me lazy, but it's all I can get through anymore. Too many memories of teachers pointing out symbolism. SOMETIMES IT JUST IS WHAT IT IS!!!

ahem.

I reccomend Nick Hornby to most people.

Though I think youd like the ADD writing of Dave Eggers. Seriously ADD.

Har. I really should. indydc has tons of it which I need to mine more effectively. But I'll definitely give Hornby a go.

I've also been told that I write, or at least think, like Eggers. A lot of people I know actually talk about that book a lot, so I feel like it's something that I should actually attempt to read.

You totally should. Not just mine indydc's collection (it sounds like he lives in your building. go. tonight. unless he has a life. or you do.) but read eggers as well. Though HBWoSG is the only thing of his I like. He has an intro, like you have an abstract.

Har. I am actually Dave Eggers.

He does live in my building, so it's mad convenient. I have a handful of his books that I've borrowed, actually, and I even read one! The Dante Club! Which I think should have been a lot better than it was.

But. Yeah!

Ive tried reading the Dante Club twice so far, but I can't get into it. I'll try again this summer.

It doesn't surprise me that you couldn't get into it. It doesn't get good until about 150 pages in, and even then it's kind of...languid.

Mine away. If you'd like, I actually have road_to_hell's top 4. The fifth is a mystery to me. (But not in that MSW sort of way.)

Speaking of MSW (which we totally were...) did you know that they actually published books by Jessica Fletcher? Don't believe me? Amazon.com it.

You're welcome.

(And I'm sorry to say that I've actually read one of them. When I was like, 12. *Hangs head in shame.*

I probably will mine them. Hell, whynot? I forget what the fifth one was, now, and I'm too lazy to look until this comment posts, but I'm sure I have no idea either.

Books. Be Jessica Fletcher. Oh, the har. I hope they're terrible.

'Chu canna fool me! I know you know what "that L word" is since you bragged about the exuberant dorkiness you felt going to "that L word" of Congress.

It's really quite easy, even for your level of laziness ;-) You can pick your books out online from anywhere in the library system tell 'em to send 'em to the Aurora Hills "that L word" for you and then all you'd need to do is walk like 50 yards max to get 'em.
