After the end

For those of you who could and did let an ex back into your life (in any capacity: as a lover, as friends, as fuckbuddies, what have you)...do you find that there's some requirements the situation had to meet? E.g. Must the breakup be an amicable one, must there be no cheating involved on either side during the breakup, etc?

I get the basic premise that both sides have to be, at least in the case of friends (no idea about the possible re-entry into a relationship; add that if you want) 1. no longer interested in a relationship and maybe even involved with other people, but still want to make the whatever-amount-of-involvement work, and 2. have the necessary time and/or distance until requirement 1 is achieved. What I'm curious about is the other requirements aside from time/distance/emotional detachment (if there are any, in your opinion).

So. Would it only work if the breakup had been amiable and you two had grown apart, or...?
