chiming in a bit late here, nice reference sheets BTW. As to the issue of feral/non feral I think you were wronged. Typically when someone gives a character ref sheet where the characters are upright it should be assumed they are anthro. In fact if you go to a fur convention and or take a pole of random furries probably 80+ percent will raise their hand as to their character being anthro. The only reason I can see that the artist would have drawn it non-anthro was they thought it was something like the Vulpix Pokemon's cousin.
I will say though in artists defense that you paid for a speedpaint commission knowingly when the artist was trying new things within a time of flux.
Being a fan of Cyantian Chronicles you know "new techniques" could be something like drawing in manga or chibi style and in this case it seems doing more feral work was the flavor the artist chose to work on.
Me, well I would have probably brought to the artist attention that you felt "new techniques" was respective to the background textures because of how the post was written (they'd be simple backgrounds, heavily textured, maybe in wacky colors, etc) rather than the technique or format in which the characters were drawn (feral/anthro) and that there was a miss-communication between the both of you.
By pointing out how their posting can be misconstrued and not playing the "blame game" but merely stating a "miss communication" you put yourself in a position to go to the table on even ground and say, so how do we want to fix this? The approach you chose in saying its not quite what I had in mind puts the artist on the defensive regardless of whether you tell them its nice or take partial blame for not providing more details.
I know its semantics but in the future when you have an issue with someone try to figure out where the misunderstanding took place and then take an empathetic approach from there. It works quite well in business situations.
