Today my doorbell rang, and I ignored it. Then someone knocked on my door, so I answered it. It was a middle-aged guy holding bibles. He said "Hi, Im Pastor Blahblah" and extended his hand to shake. I said, "No thanks" and shut the door on him.
As it was closing, he said, "God bless you." That pisses me off. I appreciate the good will of it. In tone, he was essentially saying "Have a good day, sorry to bother you." Thats fine. But at the same time, he was asserting the existence of God, and he was doing it in my house. Thats not fine.
Imagine a scene with me:
*Knock knock*
[Door opens]
Ben: "Hi! Im Atheist Ben. Can I have a moment of your time to explain why your God-belief is false and harmful?"
Occupant: "No thanks"
[Occupant begins closing door on Atheist Ben]
Ben: "THERE IS NO GOD!! Have a nice day"
That'd be pretty damned disrespectful of me, right?
