Let me start by saying that one of my goals before I die was to go live in a cabin like a hermit and "live off the land" for a year.
Most people who know me know that I really hate the consumerism of today and would relish the chance to move back to simpler times. But I don't have a time machine or the necessary clout to make widespread change, so I make do with what I have.
Going through a very bad financial time myself right now, I don't know exactly what to say. I'm all for simpler times, but if you take the attitude of the American people today and compare it to the attitude of the people who went through the Depression, I think you'll find them very different. That is to say, I don't think today's society would handle the Depression as well as the tougher, more upright citizens of yesteryear would have.
I can certainly hope that we would become better, more resourceful people if we do have another Depression, but I really don't know if we actually would.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I just don't have much faith in the people of today, and I hope if we do go down a bad financial road that we have the grit to overcome the obstacles and become better for it.
I may add more to this later if I remember my original point. :)
