Online Social Network Ghosts

Jul 04, 2006 21:51

So I have a LiveJournal and I rarely comment on other people's journals. Nowadays, I barely post in my own. I have www.bebo.com account and I have two friends, but nothing on my homepage, save a picture of myself from more than a year ago. I have a myspace account, and myspace scares me. I have a facebook account and I don't return messages to those who take it upon themselves to message me. I am fleeting ghost in all of these Online Social Networks and I don't know why I bother. If I am gonna do it, I might as well do it, but if I am not going to even use these odd social networks, then... I don't know. There's just something about online Social Networks that just doesn't click with me anymore. And this is the strange part. When I was 13-18, The internet was big for me, I would totally have been all over these social networks, spouting adolescent ignorance. Now the only reason I use these is to communicate on rare occasions with those few friends I have actually met. The internet has really only taught me one thing. There are some truly strange and scary people in this world.

Does this update have anything of use for you? I suppose it depends. Are you an Online Social Network ghost like myself, merely skirting the edges of friendsterscapes? Are you an OSN junkie? Can't help but signup for the new and improved profiling service that connects you to random other folks that share your interests? Help me out. Explain to me what the appeal is of creating a web of online personae of yourself. Multitudes of digital simulacra, that meet and interact with multitudes of other digital simulacra.

I understand part of the appeal, I do. That's why I am a part of so many, but now I am confused as to why I do such a thing.

Anyone tried Opera 9, Thoughts on Flock Beta, Should I switch from my newly skinned Firefox?
