I've been trying to play more characters recently, and with Noel and Hakumen I've achieved some level of success. Noel through brute force practice, and Hakumen through a conceptual breakthrough. In between getting a handle on those two, I've tried a few other characters: Rachel, Taokaka, Arakune, and in ages past even Litchi.
But none of those characters have stuck. I don't know what it is about them. I'm sure time plays a factor: I just haven't spent as much time playing them as I did with Noel and Hakumen, and certainly not Bang. But the other day I decided to try my hand at Jim. Jim Kisseragrappy.
I guess maybe I'm secretly gay? We just... resonated. I get him. And he gets me. I know I'm probably just infatuated with his plethora of good normals. (He's real good at poking xD xD XDXDXD) This is the first character I've played in Blazblue that actually feels like he has a wealth of options from a neutral position.
Sure, Tager has a lot of options, but they're mostly defensive options. Can't wait till his CS oki game arrives. Bang as well has a lot of options, but they rotate almost entirely around his oki game. His poking game is painfully short range. Hakumen, "King of Normals," is pretty pathetic without meter (which means "normals only." Huh). Noel's got king 5A and like two good AAs. Buh.
Kayin, the guy who made I Wanna Be the Guy once wrote a post about
why blazblue sucks. He misses the mark on a lot of things, but one thing that I didn't understand until now is that he was very, very correct when he said Jin's normals are, for BB, pretty good, and that "all the good normals seem to go to the zoners." Back when I first read it I was like "U JEST L2PLY U DOTN UNDERSTAND BUILTYBLUE" but shit man he was right. I'm glad a lot of characters who need better normals are getting them in CS, but I also miss games where everyone has lots of good normals. Scratch that, I miss Guilty Gear where everyone had lots of good normals. But back to CT.
I feel joyous at the prospect of learning how to use all of Jin's different, good normals. I'm still pretty shitty at using his 5A / 2A. While not as good as Noel's, they're fast, have solid range, and lead into B&Bs. I'm almost getting better at hit confirming his standing versus crouching combos. This is going to be good practice for CS Bang, who has to hit confirm standing combos (unlike most people, who usually look out for crouching). I'm getting better at Jin's 5D as well. Slow, but only punishable if used improperly. I'm also making strides with hit confirming my j.B. Go go cloak slap.
I put off learning Jin for awhile because Nick plays him and I beat Nick enough as it is. Didn't want to embarrass him by beating him with his own guy. Then he didn't do his dishes for a month. THIS IS TRUE REVENGE. So I would like to play people with my Jim. Perhaps we do a quiet, casual get together sometime when everyone is free (HA HA HA) for a few rounds?
